Literature review

Writer: Annabel FarnoodAnnabel Farnood

Today, I had a literature review class. In order to progress to our second year, we need to have a minimum of 12 credits and each of these classes are worth either 1 or 2. I have not started my literature review yet, so this was a nice class to begin the process.

We discussed the lay out and went over previous examples which really helped provide a more structured view. We also went over some reading techniques which were very useful. Sometimes when you are reading an article, you can get lost in the words and halfway through, you realise you haven't taken anything in. A really good technique we got taught today was after every paragraph you read, write one sentence summarising what you have taken from that paragraph. I have found this method so simple but smart and definitely one I will give a try.

This class was great to attend before starting my literature review as it gave me an insight to see what is expected of us. Advice that was given to me when I started my PhD was to be as organised as possible and do as much in your first year as you can. So here I am, trying to be organised and giving myself a very busy schedule!
